Biography - Professor Mark Steven Workentin
Professor Mark Workentin joined The University of Western Ontario as an Assistant Professor in 1995 after three years as a Research Officer at the Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences at the National Research Council of Canada. Dr. Workentin was promoted to Associate Professor in 2000 and to Professor in 2005. He is a multi award-winning university teacher with honors including the OCUFA Excellence in Teaching Award, Western’s Pleva and Marilyn Robinson Award, and being awarded the University Student Council Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching on two occassions. He has been a University Faculty Scholar (2005-2007), a Ontario Premier's Excellece Award holder and a CFI Awardee.
His multidisciplinary research program is broadly described as the physical organic chemistry of materials. His research program has earned over 2 million dollars in individual research funding, and has contributed to over 18 million dollars in collaborative grants. He currently serves on the Canadian National Committee of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (CNC-IUPAC), and has served on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) as the Diretor of Accreditation and on and the Federation of Canadian Professional Chemists (FCPC). In the past he has served on the executive committees of the Organic Division of the Canadian Chemical Society (Chair) and the Organic and Biological Division of The Electrochemical Society. He was Co-Program Chair for CCCE2019 in Quebec City and is the Chair of the Orgainzing Committe for #IUPAC2027 #CCCE2027 Montréal, Québec, CANADA.
Within the University he serves or has served on numerous Senate Committees, including the Senate Committee on University Planning, the Senate Committee on Academic Policy and Admissions, Senate Committee on Program Reform- Undergraduate, Senate Committee on Progrma Reform-Gradute, Senate Review Board Academic, Senate Committee on Undergraduate Program Reform, the University Discipline Appeals Committee and as an Adjudicator for GBSV Appeals. He also served on the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council’s (NSERC) AGENO Grant Selection Committee and the National Science Foundation Grant Review Panel in Organic Dynamics.
Most importantly he is the father of three daughters (Abu el banat) and a dog (Mac) and enjoys time with them and his wife with soccer, ringette, camping, swimming, skiing, hiking and other adventures.
