Linguists use the word "grammar" differently than
its most common meaning. To linguists, grammar involves everything speakers
know about their language.
Grammar therefore includes the sound system (phonology),
the rules of word formation (morphology), the rules of sentence formation
(syntax), and the system of meaning (semantics).
Linguists set out to find not only the rules of a particular
language, but also the rules that hold in all languages. The rules that
pertain to all human languages make up Universal Grammar.
The primary goal of linguistics theory is to characterize
the principles of Universal Grammar.
Universal Grammar according to Noam Chomsky and many other
linguists is part of the human biologically endowed language faculty.
All humans are born "hardwired" to acquire language, which explains
why children pick up languages so quickly and easily.
