Schedule View Course Schedule

This course examines the social and historical context of the emergence of sociology, and critically presents the major ideas of its most important theorists from eighteenth century to the present. The standpoint of women in sociological theory is emphasized. We celebrate Erving Goffman's sociology in a special section.

Format: 3 hour lectures.

Evaluation:

Students are required to write a midterm (end of November), and take-home final exam (due in mid-April). The midterm will be 50% multiple choice, and 50% short-answer essays. The final will consist of two or three short-answer essays. Regular attendance is important. Attendance will be taken at random five times each term. More than two recorded absences per term will result in a deduction of up to five percent on the final grade.  In addition, there is a major course essay, due mid-semester.  Late essays will be deducted 5% per day.
