I joined the Sinclair lab in January 2011 as a volunteer, and the welcoming people and interesting research was encouragement for me to stay in the lab to do a 4th year honours research project. I am comparing three respirometry approaches that are used to measure the thermal sensitivity of metabolism in ectotherms: independent- static temperature respirometry (STR), repeated–STR and dynamic temperature respirometry (DTR). I will measure the thermal sensitivity of metabolic rate in the fall field cricket, Gryllus pennsylvanicus, using repeated-STR, independent-STR and DTR, to determine whether the three respirometry approaches yield equivalent estimates of metabolic thermal sensitivity.
