The YAC is a branch of the Youth Opportunities Unlimited pogram. This resource centre is located in the basement at the corner of Dundas & Richmond, which provides information and referrals to at-risk, transient and street youth. YAC offers the following:
outreach
life skills groups
counselling
prevention education
parenting education
basic needs provisions
3 day food supply on the 15th of the month
baby food
On site, they have showers, needle exchange, first aid supplies, and they provide condoms.
They assist the kids in finding housing, food, legal aid, and much more.
They offer breakfast and dinner to the youth Monday through Friday from 8 – 10am and 5:30pm, and they offer a light meal from 1 – 4 on Saturdays.
On our visit out to the centre, we met an 18 year old woman who had been off and on the street since she was a very young child, who proudly informed us that she was going to school and that she now had an apartment.
We were told that socks were extremely important to the kids. Due to the flimsy shoes that they wear all year long, their feet are often wet and cold.
I am proud to say that Denise Farr and Sherri Moore began a sock drive through UWOSA, called Let's Talk About Sox. Last year, they collected more than 700 pairs of socks.
