Starting a Program

The only investment to start a TRPG program include:

  • A rulebook.
  • Pencils.
  • Paper.
  • Character sheets.
  • Dice (d6 or polyhedral dice sets).
  • ... and a lot of imagination!

When designing TRPG programs, librarians are encouraged to focus on one or two different game systems.

To create more depth within a gaming program, librarians may choose to include miniatures, battlefields, maps, and dry-erase grid mats. If purchasing miniatures proves to be cost prohibitive, a creative librarian may incorporate the library’s maker space in 3D printing custom character miniatures and game props for a well-rounded STEAM program.

Spatial Considerations

A major consideration is the space in which the program will take place. Since these programs tend to be small (no more than six players), yet highly involved, a private room is ideal to contain noise levels and promote concentration.

Time Considerations

Librarians should plan to host TRPG programs for at least two or three hours, as combat and exploration tend to be time consuming.

TRPG programming is not only limited to public libraries, they have also been successful in school and academic libraries.
