Learning Outcomes

After attending classes, participating in class discussion, completing readings and assignments, and completing all other course requirements, students will be able:

  1. To articulate and discuss the ways in which Young Adult literature is different from both adult literature and children’s literature and recognize the value of this type of literature.
  2. To hypothesize the ways in which reading Young Adult literature can influence the adults that these youth become.
  3. To create an argument, supported by research, logic, and real-life experience, that advances the field of study of Young Adult literature in a meaningful way.
  4. To read Young Adult materials critically and in a short-time frame.

Alongside these course learning outcomes, I invite all prospective students to write some learning outcomes and goals for themselves. Feel free to send me these as a contribution to your participation grade, or to keep them solely to yourself. At the end of the semester, check back here to review these outcomes and your own goals, and evaluate yourself to see if you have met them.

Learning outcomes are important for several reasons. They keep us on track throughout the semester, they ensure that we are progressing our learning and critical thinking skills, and they demonstrate the value of a particular course.
