Statement on Classroom Culture
The classroom culture is something that we will build together over the duration of the semester. In our first class, we will create a written document together called our classroom code, which will outline how we hope to feel when we come into this class each week and how we hope to relate to each other. It is dependent on all of us.
I do have a few things right off the bat that will contribute to our classroom culture. Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility are paramount in this course. My hope is that you will see this reflected in our course reading list and in the topics we will discuss. Any sort of hateful speech or actions will not be tolerated in our classroom. Additionally, understand that if someone is calling you in, this is again another opportunity to learn and grow.
You are not required to call anybody in. I will do my very best to ensure that no extra labour will be put onto those who have been marginalized by society. I also strive to take responsibility for my privilege as a white, cisgendered, upper middle class, able –bodied woman. Question me, always! Never hesitate to call me in, either, or challenge me.
